Industrial Engineering: Solving the "Ship in a Bottle" Retrofit Challenge
We are pleased to share a recently completed project within the industrial sector: the structural design of a bespoke access walkway and elevated platform. This project was specifically engineered for a highly constrained brownfield retrofit, where space and access were at a premium.
In industrial engineering, we often face the "ship in a bottle" challenge, how to install robust new infrastructure within an existing, active facility with a tight footprint and limited access for heavy machinery.
Engineering for Constrained Environments
Our solution focused on a high-precision, modular structural design that allowed for a seamless installation without disrupting site operations. The comprehensive structural package included:
Steelwork Design (Eurocode EN 1993-1-1): Primary frames designed for durability and compliance within an industrial setting.
Optimised Connection Design (EN 1993-1-8): Every bolted joint was engineered for quick and easy site assembly, reducing the time required for on-site hot works or complex fitting.
Man-Portable Modular Layout: We designed the platform in small, manageable sections. This allowed the structure to be erected by on-site personnel using manual handling techniques, completely removing the need for heavy lifting plant in restricted areas.
Digital Clash Detection: Using advanced 3D structural modelling, we performed rigorous clash detection against the existing infrastructure to ensure a "right-first-time" fit.
Supporting East Anglia’s Food Manufacturing Industry
The East of England is home to one of the UK’s most vital food manufacturing and processing hubs. From the agricultural heartlands of Norfolk and Suffolk to the major production facilities in King’s Lynn, Thetford, and Bury St Edmunds, we understand that food-grade environments require a specialist approach.
Based at the Hethel Engineering Centre (NR14 8FB), Odysea Engineering Consultants Ltd provides bespoke structural design for food production sites where hygiene, safety, and minimal downtime are non-negotiable. Whether it is adding new mezzanine access above a production line or a capacity upgrade for heavy processing equipment, we deliver fabrication-focused solutions that respect the constraints of a live manufacturing environment.
