Commercial Fit-Out Excellence: Delegated Design of a Steel Staircase in Norwich
We are pleased to showcase a recently completed project involving the delegated design of a steel staircase for a commercial property in Norwich. As part of a larger fit-out work package, Odysea Engineering was brought in to provide the specialist structural expertise required to bridge the gap between architectural intent and steel fabrication.
A key challenge in any commercial fit-out is ensuring new structural elements integrate perfectly with the existing building. For this project, our scope was comprehensive, covering everything from the primary skeleton to the finest assembly details.
Precision Engineering for Fabrication
To ensure the staircase was both high-performing and cost-effective to build, our work involved:
Structural Analysis & Sizing: We performed a rigorous structural analysis to size the main stringers and landing members, specifically addressing vibration and deflection limits to ensure the structure feels solid in the best way possible.
Trimming Steel & Openings: We designed the bespoke trimming steel required to form the new opening between levels. This is a critical step in fit-out work, ensuring the existing floor diaphragm remains stable after the structural alterations.
Bespoke Connection Design: We provided a complete connection design package for all bolted and welded joints. By focusing on fabrication-friendly details, we simplified the steel fabrication process and reduced the time required for on-site installation.
Visualising the Data
As shown in the attached structural analysis plots, we utilise 3D modelling to identify stress concentrations and load paths. This level of detail allows us to provide a "right-first-time" delegated design, giving the fabricator total confidence before they begin cutting steel.
