Steel Brise Soleil – Simple Design, Smart Engineering
Here’s a recent project where we designed and analysed a bespoke steel brise soleil for a new commercial building. It looks clean and minimalist from the outside, but a lot of engineering sits behind that simplicity.
The structure used tapered ‘T’ sections as primary beams, with flat plate fins welded on to form the shading elements. Each unit was fabricated as a fully welded module off-site, making installation much quicker and safer once on site.
We ran a full design assessment to check deflection of the fins and stress within the steel under combined wind and snow loading. The deflections were within limits and the tapered beams helped reduce the overall weight and achieve the desired finish.
Connection points were designed with installation in mind, pre-fixed brackets allowed the modules to slot into place with minimal adjustment. That meant less time working at height, and reduced install time.
This is a good example of how early structural input helps keep things simple - clean lines, easy install, and solid performance. Exactly how it should be.
