Structural Integrity: Designing Large Web Openings in Steel Beams
At Odysea Engineering, we are always looking for practical, cost-effective solutions that deliver tangible value to our clients. A recent project perfectly illustrated this: our client required a large service opening through the web of a W1100 steel beam (a substantial section) to avoid the high costs and delays associated with rerouting new industrial pipework.
Instead of a "no" or a costly beam replacement, we provided a scientifically backed "yes" by ensuring the structural integrity of the modified section.
The Hybrid Approach: Hand Calculations + FEA
Cutting into a primary structural member changes stress distribution and load paths. To ensure safety and compliance with UK building standards, we approached this challenge with a blend of established engineering methods and advanced digital tools:
Fundamental Verification: We utilised rigorous hand calculations to verify the initial impact of the web opening, carefully assessing how the loss of material affected the beam's shear and bending capacity.
Advanced Finite Element Analysis (FEA): We then moved into IdeaStatica to perform a detailed analysis of the bolted connections and local stress concentrations. This allowed us to model exactly how the adjusted load conditions would behave around the new opening.
Bolted Connection Design: By using computer-aided analysis, we ensured the connection could safely handle the redistributed loads without the need for over-engineered (and expensive) reinforcements.
Why FEA Matters for Your Project
By combining tried-and-true engineering principles with Finite Element Analysis (FEA), we achieve solutions that are both efficient and safe. This hybrid approach allows us to tackle complex industrial challenges—like bespoke modifications or capacity upgrades—without compromising the end result or the project budget.
